Whales swim backwards! Important information for parents.
Avoid negatives and negative statements!
If you tell your child: “That does not hurt!”, “You will not feel anything!”, Understands your child but “It hurts, I’ll feel something! “The syringe pricks but only a little” Your child hears “syringe” and “pricks” it will prick (in the general event of anesthesia) “You don’t need to be afraid!” is understood as “I have to be afraid!” The subconscious mind knows no negation!
Discuss any negative stories about dental visits by others at home with your child.
You as parents should express only positive views about dental visits! If you lack such positive experiences, it may be better not to say anything.
Do not talk too much about treatment processes because sometimes you could instill your child with needless anxiety! Trust us we will best prepare your child for treatment with his and with our words! Some examples:
- Syringe = sleeping drops, letting teeth go to sleep
- Drill = tooth brush
- Filling = putting in a new tooth
- Examination = counting teeth
Encourage the children is to go alone into the treatment room.
Should this not be possible initially, a companion can be present at the treatment.
Let us guide your child and please follow our instructions – Even if you find it difficult at this moment or you can not understand
Only through good cooperation between parents and the dentist – you and us – is successful, promising and pleasant treatment possible; we also have children!
