Fillings of ceramics – closest to nature
Fillings made of ceramic (“ceramic inlay”) are superior to other filling materials. They are not like other plastic fillings – soft at first – processed directly in the mouth, but made from an impression precisely and accurately in the dental laboratory. They do not change in the mouth and remain permanently stable. If the tooth does not suffer new decay at a different location or the filling does not fit properly from the start, the durability of the filling is unlimited in itself. So there are still inlays which even after 30 years look as good as they did on the first day!
The hardness corresponds to the natural tooth, ensuring a similar abrasion (abrasion) guarantee for tooth and filling and thus the possible chewing load corresponds to the natural tooth. Thus even large filling or whole cusps (partial crowns) can be replaced by inlays.
The costs are indeed high compared to other fillings because of the complex manufacturing process, however, their long shelf life makes them more time-effective.
Ceramic inlays correspond to perfect imitations of nature – as a kind of “artificial enamel” – the highest demands with respect to aesthetics, more natural shape. The result: even at close range these inlays can not be perceived as such.
For this reason, ceramic inlays are for us today the method of choice when emphasis is placed on aesthetics and durability.
